How does battery storage Work?

While your solar panels are generating energy during the day, the energy they produce will first meet the household’s current energy demands. So, if you’re at home using appliances when your panels are generating, this will be powered by your solar PV system as usual.

If you have a battery, excess solar energy will then be diverted to the battery, instead of being sent back to the grid (the UK network for delivering electricity from producers to users). Once the battery is fully charged, any further excess energy is then fed into the grid. This is one reason why battery capacity (i.e. how much energy the battery holds) is important.

When your solar system produces less energy than your home is using, such as in the evening, the stored energy in the battery will then supply the energy required. This means you’re not buying in energy in from the grid when you otherwise would be, reducing your energy bills.

How does battery storage Work?

Commercial energy storage is a vital player in the new smart grid era. An increasing amount of renewable energy is being generated at sites across the UK.

Renewable energy generation is intermittent, generating more when it’s sunny or windy. Because both end users and the grid need energy at different times, energy storage is needed to ensure a smooth supply. Batteries can play a part here on many scales, saving on energy costs for the end user and reducing strain on the grid. For example, they can:

  • Store excess energy generated by on-site solar PV, then make this energy available at times of peak demand
  • Import energy when its cheap and then provide this energy on-site at peak times (time of use load shifting)
  • Provide additional income through grid services, essentially being called upon to provide energy to the grid when needed

There are many options and different setups available and so a bespoke approach is essential.

A commercial storage system can form part of a holistic energy package, including solar PV, or it can be setup in isolation to offer grid services. We design and install large, complex energy storage systems for customers with very high on-site usage, integrating with several other clean technologies. We also install smaller systems combining several Tesla Power packs for customers with smaller demands.

To get the best solution possible, it’s really important that the size, type and setup you invest in is the most suitable for you. To speak to our team about your options, just contact us.
